Sacred History of Cacao

In ancient times Cacao was used for ceremonial and medicinal purposes. The Mayan Shamans used ceremonial cacao to open the heart and access higher dimensions. The ancient Mayans called it the “Food of the Gods”.

Cacao can act as a powerful aphrodisiac that awakens the “love hormones” in the body, such as serotonin and dopamine. It has the power to provide mental clarity, to move you from your head to your heart, and to produce a gentle euphoria.

A Maya legend tells us that whenever there is an imbalance between humans and nature, cacao comes from the rainforest to open people’s hearts and return the planet to a state of harmony. Some shamans therefore consider cacao the “food for the shift.” It represents the new order of love and peace, which is being cultivated right now.

'According to both archeologists and Mayan spiritual elders, the Cacao Spirit was one of the most powerful deities in ancient Mayan cosmology.  While the ancient Mayans and Aztecs of Southern Mexico and Guatemala are best known, there are contemporary Indigenous cultures in Central and South America who continue cacao use in shamanic ceremony. Although one of this world’s finest spiritual or shamanic partners, cacao was ignored in the ‘60’s resurgence of medicine plants because it does not act like a psychedelic – it does not take you on its trip, but facilitates your own. Ceremonial details of how ancient cultures used chocolate are not known.  It is Cacao’s choice to return at this time, and I am having fun being part of Her flow.''

For those wanting to take their practice further, we offer Munay Cacao Private Sessions to support you in creating a personal daily Cacao Ceremonial practice that will support you within where you are within your journey right now.

The spirit of Cacao encouraged us to start spreading the magic of Cacao when I was in Peru January 2018 on a San Pedro Plant Medicine Journey. At that point I had never experienced a Cacao Ceremony. I began sitting in Ceremony daily with Cacao, and connected with the plant, and started being shown this.

Munay in the Quecha language of the Incas in Peru means is a verb that means to love, and a noun describing a state of love and being which is unconditional, eternal and without reason or thinking.

For the Qero Shamans, Munay is one of the three pillars that support one's path in becoming a Keeper of the Earth. It is more than a kind of love, it is a Divine Willpower. It is an energetic power that far exceeds physical power, and by the Qero, is the type of power that would lift megalithic stones at sacred sites in ancient times.

The energy of Munay is located at the heart (sonqo nawi). Rather than an emotion, Munay is seen as a sense of respect and appreciation for everyone and everything. It is connected to living in 'ayni' which is a state of reciprocity, which is to live in right relationship with all of creation.

“To walk in Munay, is to walk in the power of Love, to walk your own walk and is the path of living from your heart. ”

The Importance of a Daily Practice

A daily practice has been the NUMBER ONE key to my own embodiment, alignment and sense of connection with Self and the Divine. It is recommended to participate in your daily practice in the early morning hours, before the dawning of the morning sun. It is at this time that the earth is quiet, there are no distractions and that you are able to use this time to set the tone for your day by aligning with your Soul. If this is difficult because of different circumstances - then at least try this once, and get a feel for the difference between completing the practice at this time versus late morning or evening!

Change your habits, change your destiny

Habit controls us so much and it is said that we can actually change our destiny, by changing our habits. The benefits of practicing this daily include - setting your vibration and alignment at the start of the day, moving from head to heart at the start of the day to bring in more joy and better mood throughout the day and the commitment to daily practice develops life promoting habit.

40 days: Change a habit

90 days: Confirm the habit

120 days: You are the new habit

1000 days: Mastery of the new habit

Inspiring a habit can occur through setting a clear intention for what the benefits of a daily practice would have on your life. Have a clear picture for what the result of this daily practice will mean for you, your life and all areas of your life at the moment. Why have you chosen to do it, or why should you choose to do this? The clearer that your intention, and the more that you are able to connect with the benefits this would mean to you, your relationships, your business, your health and your life, the more motivation and inspiration you will create to create the new habit.

Creating an Altar

Creating an altar for your altar for yourself, and your daily practice can take your daily Cacao Ceremonial practice next level, although it’s of course not a mandatory thing to do - only if you feel called! The Altar is a place where you go to sit and “alter your consciousness”. It becomes a hub for who you are, becoming the heart of you, and a Sacred place for you to come to meditate, connect with your intuition and bring in constant blessings. The purpose behind an altar is to honour Divine energies, express gratitude, give offerings and ask for blessings and protection. In terms of how you arrange and set up your altar, this is COMPLETELY UP TO YOU! Get creative, and make it a fun process.

Guidelines and inspiration for setting up your altar:

  • Find images that speak to you of love, devotion, protection, that are infused with personal meaning and have a strong energy connection to who you are. This could also include photos of specific animal totem medicine such as Wolf, Jaguar, Hummingbird, Serpent, Condor, Bear… or Goddesses such as Kuan Yin, Mary Magdalene, Lakshmi.

  • Statues can also be used for symbolic representation and these can be interchanged depending on your themes of ceremonies such as Jesus, Buddha, Kuan Yin, Ganesh (remover of obstacles, Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth)

  • Connecting with the elements or creating a more natural approach can also occur such as a feather for the air element, a candle for the fire element, any piece of nature such as a flower, stone or stick and for the water element this could be a bowl of water, sea shells or sea salt.

  • Other items could include incense, candles, essential oils and crystals

  • Feng-shu wise it is best to have the altar in the Northwest area of the house, although this is not necessary

  • Generally the altar could be in a space higher than the floor, choosing a space for practical purposes so that you will not have to disturb the energy of your altar to use the spot for other activities

  • You could do a mini space clearing before setting up the area, freshening and cleaning this by burning sage or palo santo

  • Then, simply start preparing the space and placing the items down. You can also use a piece of fabric for these to go on, trusting your intuition with the right placement. It is good Feng Shui to move your altar items often and keep the energy flowing and fresh

  • The energy of the altar will get strong in time and is powered by your attention to it, so be sure to keep connecting to it, light a candle, burn fragrant incense, spend time there and connect with it each morning or night.

  • Please note, if you do not wish to create a larger altar in this way, you can use a candle for your daily practice or a crystal.
